Stem Cell Scalp Treatment
What it is
"Stem cell scalp treatment" can be a confusing name because products marketed this way do not necessarily contain live stem cells. One approach studied for hair loss uses stem cell-conditioned media, sometimes called the stem cell secretome.
Conditioned media is the liquid collected after cells have been grown in culture. During culture, cells release proteins and signalling molecules into the surrounding medium. The cells themselves can then be removed, leaving a cell-free mixture containing substances they secreted.
Most of the hair-loss research in this area has focused on conditioned media or related extracts produced from adipose-derived stem cells. These products should not be assumed to be equivalent to live stem-cell therapy, isolated exosomes, or other products marketed using "stem cell" terminology.
"Stem cell scalp treatment" is not one standardized treatment. Products can differ in their cellular source, manufacturing process, composition and delivery method. Ask what the actual product contains rather than relying on the treatment name alone.
If a clinic states that live stem cells, rather than conditioned media, are being injected or applied, that specific claim is worth scrutinizing. Live stem cell therapy is a regulated medical procedure subject to considerably more oversight than a conditioned-media product, and the distinction is not simply a matter of marketing language.

- To explore an emerging treatment being studied for androgenetic alopecia and other forms of hair loss
- Because stem cell-conditioned media contains secreted biological factors that are being investigated for their effects on hair follicles

What the experience is like
There is no single standardized way to perform stem cell-conditioned media scalp treatment. In published human studies, conditioned media has often been delivered into the scalp through intradermal injections. Other commercial protocols may use different methods, including topical application or combination procedures.
This distinction matters because evidence from an injected product cannot automatically be applied to a topical salon treatment, and results from one conditioned-media formulation cannot automatically be transferred to another.
Treatment schedules also vary between studies. Some published clinical research has used repeated treatments over several months, while other studies have evaluated shorter protocols or conditioned media in combination with another hair-loss treatment.
Limitations & considerations
- The term "stem cell treatment" can cover substantially different products. Conditioned media, stem cell extracts, isolated extracellular vesicles or exosomes, and live-cell procedures are not interchangeable
- Human evidence for conditioned media and related stem cell-derived products remains limited compared with more thoroughly studied treatments for androgenetic alopecia
- Several studies are small, uncontrolled or use protocols that are difficult to compare directly
- Delivery method matters. Evidence from intradermal injection should not be used as proof that topical application produces the same effect
- Combination studies can be difficult to interpret because improvement cannot necessarily be attributed to the conditioned media alone
- Product composition and manufacturing can differ, so evidence for one formulation does not establish effectiveness for every product marketed as a stem cell scalp treatment
- Long-term effectiveness and safety have been studied less than short-term outcomes
- No specific hair-growth or density outcome can be guaranteed
