Hair Steam Treatment
What it is
Hair steam treatment exposes the scalp and hair to warm, humid air. It is usually included as one step within a longer head-spa or scalp-care session rather than performed as a treatment on its own.
Steam may be used before cleansing or after a scalp product has been applied. Providers may describe it as helping to prepare the scalp for cleansing or helping products absorb, but these specific benefits have not been demonstrated in clinical studies of commercial scalp-steaming treatments.
Laboratory research does show that temperature can affect how some substances move through and remain within skin. However, that is a general principle of skin penetration and does not establish that salon steam meaningfully improves the performance of a particular scalp product.

What the experience is like
How steam is delivered varies. A provider may use a hooded device positioned around the head or equipment that directs warm mist toward the scalp and hair.
The steam step is generally intended to feel warm and humid rather than uncomfortably hot. The duration depends on the device and the larger treatment protocol.
What happens next also varies. Steam may be followed by cleansing, or it may be used after a serum, mask or other topical product has been placed on the scalp or hair.
Limitations & considerations
- Direct clinical evidence evaluating commercial scalp steaming as a distinct treatment is limited
- Steam is not a treatment with demonstrated effect on androgenetic alopecia or other forms of hair loss
- Claims that steam removes buildup, cleans follicles or makes a subsequent cleansing treatment more effective should not be assumed without evidence for the specific protocol
- Heat can affect the penetration of some substances through skin under controlled laboratory conditions, but this does not show that steam meaningfully increases absorption of every scalp serum, ampoule or mask
- The available laboratory research used specific compounds and controlled temperatures. Its results cannot be directly transferred to different commercial products, steam devices or treatment protocols
- More absorption is not automatically better. Whether increased skin penetration is useful depends on the particular substance being applied
- Steam should feel comfortably warm rather than hot. Excessive heat can injure skin, so the treatment should be stopped if it becomes painful or uncomfortably hot
- A scalp that is already irritated, injured or unusually sensitive to heat may require the steam step to be modified or avoided
