Glutathione IV
What it is
Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in cells throughout the body. Intravenous glutathione delivers glutathione directly into the bloodstream through an IV infusion or injection.
Glutathione has also been promoted for skin lightening because of its effects on pathways involved in melanin production. Evidence for skin-lightening effects, however, differs substantially according to how glutathione is administered. Results from oral or topical studies should not automatically be assumed to apply to intravenous treatment.

What the experience is like
Glutathione is administered through a vein. The dose, infusion method, ingredients combined with glutathione, number of treatments, and spacing between treatments can vary between clinics.
There is no well-established cosmetic IV protocol supported by strong clinical evidence. The placebo-controlled study cited below used a preparation containing glutathione together with vitamin C, hydrolyzed collagen, sodium chloride, and water rather than glutathione alone.
Limitations & considerations
- The available IV evidence is much more limited than the literature on oral and topical glutathione
- A 2025 systematic review identified only one placebo-controlled study of IV glutathione for skin lightening
- The IV study used a combination product rather than glutathione alone, so its findings should not be treated as evidence for every IV glutathione formulation
- Among participants included in the final comparison, 6 of 16 receiving the IV treatment showed skin-tone improvement compared with 3 of 16 receiving placebo; the difference did not reach conventional statistical significance (p=0.054)
- The reported improvement diminished after treatment stopped, with only one participant maintaining the improvement at six months
- Abnormal liver function tests and anaphylaxis were reported in the IV study
- IV administration also carries risks associated with intravenous treatment and with other ingredients that may be included in a formulation
- No particular degree of skin lightening or duration of effect can be guaranteed
