Galvanic Scalp Treatment
What it is
Galvanic scalp treatment uses a low electrical current as one step within a scalp-care session. The term can be used for different cosmetic techniques, so what the device is intended to do should be checked rather than assumed from the word "galvanic" alone.
One established use of low electrical current in medicine and pharmaceutical research is iontophoresis. Iontophoresis uses electrical current to increase the movement of certain substances into or through the skin. Charged molecules can be moved by electrical repulsion, while electro-osmosis can also contribute to transport.
How well iontophoresis works depends on factors including the substance being delivered, its charge and molecular properties, the formulation, current, treatment duration, electrodes and the skin being treated. Evidence that iontophoresis can enhance delivery of one substance therefore does not establish that a commercial galvanic scalp device improves delivery of every scalp serum or ampoule.

What the experience is like
The device uses electrodes that contact the treatment area while a low electrical current is applied. The equipment, electrode design, current settings and treatment time vary by device and protocol.
When iontophoresis is used for delivery, a compatible topical formulation is applied in connection with the electrical treatment. Mild tingling may occur, while some people may notice little sensation at lower current levels.
The galvanic step may be included within a longer scalp-care session rather than offered as a standalone treatment.
Limitations & considerations
- Direct clinical evidence for commercial galvanic scalp treatments as a distinct treatment category is limited
- Iontophoresis can enhance skin delivery of certain substances, but the result depends on the molecule, formulation, electrical parameters and treatment site. It should not be assumed to increase absorption of every scalp product
- Clinical evidence for iontophoresis in another dermatologic condition or with another drug does not establish that a scalp ampoule or serum will work better when paired with a galvanic device
- Claims that galvanic treatment improves hair growth, hair density or follicle function require evidence for the particular device, product and protocol rather than evidence for iontophoresis generally
- Electrical current can cause skin irritation, redness, discomfort or burns, particularly when current density, treatment duration or electrode conditions are inappropriate
- Damaged or irritated skin can affect tolerability and electrical delivery. Device-specific instructions and precautions should be followed
- People with implanted electronic medical devices or other conditions that could interact with electrical treatment should check the specific device precautions and discuss treatment with an appropriate healthcare professional before proceeding
